Publication Notice. Swiss public finances: Figures 2024 and provisional estimates for 2025

Bern, 03.03.2026 — The Financial Statistics Section of the Federal Finance Administration (FFA) publishes the financial statistics with figures from 2024 and publishes a provisional estimate for 2025. The data can be accessed on the data portal.

In 2024, all government units (excluding the social security funds) recorded a negative financing balance of CHF 1.1 billion. While the Confederation and the cantons reported a balanced result, the municipalities ended the year with a financing deficit. Some of the figures for the municipalities are still provisional. Based on the results of the social security funds, which recorded a positive balance of CHF 5.2 billion, the total general government (Confederation, cantons, municipalities, and social security funds) recorded a surplus of CHF 4.1 billion in 2024.

According to initial estimates for 2025, the general government surplus is likely to increase by CHF 1 billion to CHF 5.1 billion compared with 2024, despite a decrease in the social security balance (-CHF 2.1 billion compared with 2024) and the expected deficit at the municipal level (-CHF 1 billion). The increase in the general government surplus in 2025 is due to the Swiss National Bank (SNB) profit distribution totaling CHF 3 billion to the Confederation and the cantons.
